Tortoise beetle (Chrysomelidae: Cassidinae: probably a Mottled Tortoise Beetle, Deloyala guttata) from Iowa. Some tortoise beetles are capable of changing color by expanding or contracting pigment cells that control the amount of water under their cuticle; more moisture creates a shimmering mirror-like effect, while less reveals the base pigment underneath.
False flower beetle (Scraptiidae: Canifa sp.) from Monteverde, Costa Rica.
A ladybird beetle (Coccinellidae) feeds on aphids on Iowa.
