Almost immediately upon my arrival at Cocobolo Nature Reserve in Panama, Stephane de Greef brought me to a small tree and proudly challenged me to "find the bug." To my amazement, there were three of these enormous saturniid moth caterpillars (Arsenura sp.).on the tree, each one precisely mimicking the color and dimensions of their host plant's branches.
I was thrilled to see my first antlion larva (Myrmeleontidae) in Panama. These amazing creatures are normally invisible to the observer, lying completely covered in the bottom of a pit of sandy soil. When insects cross the pit, the larva kicks sand against the walls of the trap, sending the hapless victim tumbling down to its massive jaws.
