Spiny-backed orbweaver, Gasteracantha cancriformis, from the Timuacan preserve near Jacksonville, Florida.
A very exciting find from my trip to Florida - a net-casting spider, Deinopsis spinosa. Also known as ogre-faced spiders, the Deinopidae family capture prey by throwing webs onto passing invertebrates, not unlike the weighted nets of gladiatorial retiarii.
