A young hemipteran (possibly a spittlebug nymph) emerges from its old skin, a process known as molting. (Roseville, Minnesota)
Long-necked Seed Bug, Myodocha serripes (Rhyparochromidae), from Iowa.
In terms of sheer weirdness from the Panama trip, it's tough to beat this ant-mimicking treehopper, Cyphonia clavata. Many insects mimic ants due to their distastefulness as prey, but this insect takes things one step further. The "heads" are on the rear end of the hopper, meaning that as it moves forward, it appears to be moving backwards like an ant in a defensive posture. Additionally, if a predator decides to attack, it will likely attack one of the ant-like growths instead of a more vital area.
